Known for her bold and provocative films, Mehta's WATER tells the story of an eight-year-old girl who is widowed following her arranged marriage and banished to an ashram to live out her days in poverty and exile. Called “luminous” ( Chicago Sun Times ) and “a work of gorgeous fury” ( Village Voice ), WATER was seven years in the making. The fierce political controversy the film stirred up made it impossible for Mehta to make her film in India . With her sets burned to the ground and constant death threats, she was forced to move production to Sri Lanka . The WATER DVD includes director commentary and two behind-the-scenes featurettes that give an inside look into the struggles Mehta experienced producing WATER .
